GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE HEARING ON THE 9/11 COMMISSION RECOMMENDATIONS AND FINDINGS

WASHINGTON, DC - Senate Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Susan Collins (R-ME) and Ranking Member Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) are holding the first Congressional hearing on the 9/11 Commission Report this Friday, July 30th, in Washington, DC. The Honorable Thomas H. Kean and the Honorable Lee H. Hamilton, Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the Untied States, are scheduled to testify.

The hearing is scheduled to begin at 11:00 AM in the Hart Senate Office Building, Room 216. Last week, Senate leaders asked the Governmental Affairs Committee to hold hearings to consider the recommendations made by the 9-11 Commission report, which was released July 22, 2004.

In a joint news conference last Friday announcing that they would be holding hearings during the August recess, Senators Collins and Lieberman said that they would be first examining the Commission's recommendations that a National Counterterrorism Center and a National Intelligence Director position be created to better coordinate the gathering and analysis of critical intelligence. The Senators expect to have legislation including intelligence reforms ready for Senate consideration by October.
