Senator Collins Hails Passage Of Veteran Suicide Prevention Bill

Washington, D.C. – The United States Senate today approved the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans Act, which aims to reduce tragic instances of service member and veteran suicides. The final vote was 99-0 and Senator Collins is a cosponsor of the Senate version of this bill. This bill was approved by the House of Representatives last month and will now be sent to the President for his signature.

IOM Recommends Fresh, White Potato To Be Included In WIC Program

          Washington, D.C. – In a report released today, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommends that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) allow fresh, white potatoes to be eligible for purchase under the USDA Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), consistent with the most current 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) recommendations.  The white potato had been the only vegetable or fruit excluded from the WIC program.

Senator Collins Urges Rejection Of Plan To Make Saving For College More Difficult

In a speech on the Senate floor today, and in a letter sent to leaders of the Senate Finance Committee, U.S. Senator Susan Collins urges rejection of President Obama’s proposal to alter the 529 College Savings Plan. Senator Collins says the President’s plan to begin taxing the earnings of 529 College Savings Plan accounts would, instead, make it more difficult for hardworking parents to save and plan for their children’s education. The 529 College Savings Plan allows parents to make contributions to a tax-advantaged account with after-tax dollars from their paychecks.
