SNOWE, COLLINS ANNOUNCE NEARLY $1 MILLION IN FUNDS TO STOP VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Susan Collins (R-ME) today announced that $976,000 has been awarded to the Maine Department of Public Safety from the U.S. Department of Justice's STOP Violence Against Women Formula Grants Program (STOP Program).

"Each year in Maine alone, hundreds of women fall victim to assault. Since its inception, the STOP Program has been critical in helping women who are victims of assault put their lives back together. These funds will allow Maine to continue efforts that are so important to women at a vulnerable point in their lives," Senators Snowe and Collins said in a joint statement.

The DOJ's STOP Program is committed to improving the criminal justice system''s response to violent crimes against women, including the crimes of sexual assault, domestic violence, and dating violence. In order to accomplish this, the program emphasizes the implementation of comprehensive strategies to both enhance victim services in cases involving violent crimes against women and ensure that offenders are held accountable for their crimes.
