SNOWE, COLLINS ANNOUNCE MORE THAN $100,000 IN FUNDING FOR CRIME PREVENTION

WASHINGTON, D.C.-U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe (R-ME) and Susan Collins (R-ME) today announced that $103,688 has been awarded to Kennebec, Somerset, and Waldo counties as well as the City of South Portland and the Town of Sanford by the Department of Justice (DOJ). The funds will be used to purchase equipment and upgrade crime prevention technology.

"Those who work tirelessly to prevent crime in our communities should have access to the most up-to-date technology available," said Senators Snowe and Collins in a joint statement. "The grants awarded by the Department of Justice will allow recipient Counties, Cities, and Towns to be more effective at preventing and controlling crime and therefore increase their ability to keep Maine communities safe."

The funds are allocated as follows: • $48,888 to The County of Kennebec to effectively investigate crime and prosecute offenders. Kennebec County, and specifically Waterville and Augusta plan to use the funds to purchase equipment and improve technology within the police and sheriff departments. • $11,369 to The County of Somerset to upgrade technology so that all agencies are using the same software. • $10,915 to the County of Waldo to upgrade the current communication system for fire, ambulance, and law enforcement agencies in Waldo County. • $17,736 to the City of South Portland to purchase a police cruiser camcorder system that will provide video evidence of enforcement actions that can be used in court during the prosecution of criminal cases. • $14,780 to the Town of Sanford for purchasing two radios that will provide enhanced communications between the supervisory and tactical elements of the department with extended capabilities to all existing patrol fleet vehicles.
