SNOWE, COLLINS ANNOUNCE HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES FUNDS FOR MAINE

WASHINGTON, D.C.-U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe (R-ME) and Susan Collins (R-ME) today announced that Jackson Laboratory and the Disability Rights Center of Maine have received two grants totaling $73,125 from the U.S. Department of Heath and Human Services (HHS).

"Funding from the Department of Health and Human Services allows health programs in Maine to proactively address the healthcare needs of residents as well as perform research that aids people all over the world," Snowe and Collins said in a joint statement. "These recently allocated grants will support two very worthy programs and increase our knowledge about communication disorders and traumatic brain injury."

$23,125 has been awarded to the Jackson Laboratory of Bar Harbor from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD). The funds will assist in biological research related to deafness and communicative disorders. The NIDCD conducts and supports research and research training related to disease prevention and health promotion; addresses special biomedical and behavioral problems associated with people who have communication impairments or disorders.

$50,000 has been awarded to the Disability Rights Center of Maine in Augusta from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The grant will aid in traumatic brain injury protection and advocacy. Protection and Advocacy for Individuals with Traumatic Brain Injury (PATBI) is a new program, which expands the Federal P&A system by protecting the rights of persons with Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI).
