SNOWE AND COLLINS ANNOUNCE $2.1 MILLION LEAD-BASED PAINT HAZARD CONTROL GRANT TO STATE OF MAINE

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins announced today that the State of Maine will receive a $2,160,000 in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control Grant Program.

"This grant will benefit housing and community revitalization projects throughout the state," said Senators Snowe and Collins in a joint statement. "We are pleased that HUD is once again making a commitment to help us provide for local needs."

The Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control Grant Program is designed to:

• Implement a national strategy to assist states and local governments build the infrastructure necessary to eliminate lead-based paint hazards in all housing; • Encourage effective action to prevent childhood lead poisoning by establishing a workable framework for lead-based paint hazard identification and control; • Mobilize public and private resources, involving cooperation among all levels of government and the private sector, to develop the most promising, cost effective methods for identifying and controlling lead-based paint hazards; and • Promote job training, employment, and other economic lift opportunities for low-income residents and businesses which are owned by and/or employ low-income residents.
