SNOWE AND COLLINS ANNOUNCE $100,000 GRANT TO MAINE UNDERGRADUATES THROUGH MAINE SPACE GRANT CONSORTIUM

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins announced today that $100,000 in Maine Space Grant Consortium (MSGC) funding will be made available on a competitive basis to Maine students for field experience training at NASA field centers.

"We are very excited about this grant," said Senators Snowe and Collins in a joint statement. "This funding will encourage young people in Maine to pursue technical and research careers, at the same time giving them an exciting opportunity to gain direct experience working with exceptional researchers in various NASA field centers."

High-achieving students from Maine colleges and Universities will be invited to compete for one of the 10-12 slots in the program. Those selected will go on to participate in a collaborative research program. As part of the program, they will be required to participate in outreach programs designed to make other undergraduate and high school students aware of how exciting a research experience can be, along with its relevance as a career opportunity.

MSGC is NASA's representative body in Maine. It is a non-profit organization, governed by a Board of Directors representing Maine colleges, universities, research labs, state agencies, businesses, K-12 schools, and other non-profit organizations. The consortium's mission supports that of NASA and its five strategic enterprises by strengthening Maine's aerospace-related research and those educational assets important to the agency. Funding is provided through a combination of state and federal dollars.
