SENATORS SNOWE & COLLINS ANNOUNCE NEARLY $1.5 MILLION FOR LIBRARY & HEALTH CARE FACILITIES

Washington, D.C. – Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins today announced that $1,476,000 of federal grants has been awarded to four projects in Maine that will benefit persons with physical and mental healthcare needs.

The funding is for the following projects:

Ø $15,000 for the Peabody Memorial Library in Jonesport to build a handicapped-accessible addition to the library that will be used as a computer lab.

Ø $1,100,000 to Northern Maine Medical Center to construct a new wing onto a nursing home in order to create more space for nursing beds and for a new office.

Ø $161,000 to Elmhurst, Inc. of Bath to purchase an assisted-living space to care for two developmentally-disabled sisters.

Ø $200,000 to the Penquis Mental Health Association to expand the facility in order to accommodate additional day programs that provide mental heath care services to patients. The construction will also create new space for training and administrative functions.

The funding is provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Community Facilities Program, which aims to ensure that essential community facilities are available to residents living in rural areas. These facilities include schools, libraries, childcare, hospitals, medical clinics, assisted living facilities, fire and rescue stations, police stations, community centers, public buildings and transportation.
