Snowe (R-ME) and Susan Collins (R-ME) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded the University of Southern Maine two grants totaling $501,665.   “We are pleased that this federal funding will help the University of Southern Maine conduct vital research which is essential to ensure a healthy and vibrant future for Mainers throughout our state,” said Senators Snowe and Collins in a joint statement.               The federal grants were apportioned as follows:
  • $249,996 grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to develop practice improvement research.
  • $251,669 grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases to fund research into the effect of high dairy, high non-dairy, and low calcium diet on weight loss and fat loss.
The Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) is the United States government's principle agency for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves.  The Department includes more than 300 programs that cover a wide spectrum of activities and administers more grant dollars than all of the federal agencies combined.   ###
