SENATORS SNOWE, COLLINS ANNOUNCE MORE THAN $1 MILLION IN HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT FUNDING FOR MAINE



U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins today announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded $1,108,306 in funding to support several public housing authorities throughout Maine and their residents.

“The public housing authorities in Maine are committed to providing safe, decent, and affordable housing to Maine’s low-income residents,” said Senators Snowe and Collins in a joint statement. “This funding will help these organizations provide much-needed services and programs to the people who need it the most and will help build a stronger community.”

The following Housing Authorities will receive HUD funding under the Family and Homeownership Program which is granted to eligible Public Housing Authorities for the purpose of hiring a qualified Project Coordinator to run the grant program and for the delivery and coordination of supportive services and other activities that facilitate residents’ capacity to achieve economic and housing self-sufficiency.

• $250,000 – Brewer Housing Authority
• $250,000 – Portland Housing Authority

In addition, the following Housing Authorities will receive HUD funding under the ROSS-Elderly program which provides funding to Public Housing Authorities to provide and coordinate supportive services that will help elderly and/or disabled Public and Indian Housing residents continue to live independently.

• $375,000 – Aroostook Family Investment Center
• $233,306 – Westbrook Housing Authority

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development funds private housing developments to assist in housing opportunities for low-income residents. HUD provides rental assistance to approximately 1.5 million low-income households. It also funds community revitalization projects to meet local needs and expand opportunities for Americans.
