SENATORS SNOWE AND COLLINS ANNOUNCE $449,940 DOJ GRANT TO PENQUIS CAP TO BENEFIT LEGAL ASSISTANCE FOR VICTIMS PROGRAM

WASHINGTON, D.C.- U.S. Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins announced today that Penquis Community Action Program, Inc., based in Bangor, will receive $449,940 in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs. This funding will be used to support the Legal Assistance for Victims (LAV) program.

"The Legal Assistance for Victims program provides valuable legal services to ensure justice in cases of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking," said Senators Snowe and Collins in a joint statement. "This funding will play an important role in helping victims through the healing process."

The LAV program funds projects that provide comprehensive legal services through direct representation and/or victim advocacy that enhance victims' safety and strengthen their economic security. Eligible applicants include nonprofit, nongovernmental legal services organizations; victim service agencies; public entities; and Indian tribal governments.

With supplemental funding through this LAV award, Penquis CAP will collaborate with Spruce Run Association in Penobscot County and Womencare/ Ageis Association in Piscataquis County to provide comprehensive legal assistance and support services to low and moderate-income victims of domestic violence in largely rural east-central Maine.
