Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King celebrated the passage of a bipartisan resolution designating the week of May 11 through May 17, 2025, as “National Police Week.” The resolution, which was cosponsored by Senators Collins, King, and 78 of their Senate colleagues, was unanimously adopted by the Senate.
“National Police Week serves as an important reminder of the sacrifices law enforcement officers make every single day to protect communities in Maine and across the country,” said Senator Collins. “We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the brave men and women who put everything on the line to keep us safe.”
“National Police Week is a time to express our appreciation to the first responders, officers and those that literally put their lives on the line to protect our communities,” said Senator King. “The work is tough, demanding and often dangerous but these brave men and women stand up every day ready to serve, and they deserve our highest gratitude. However, our appreciation shouldn’t stop at the end of this week. Next time you see an officer, thank them for their hard work that helps to keep Maine safe.”
In addition to designating this week as “National Police Week,” the resolution honors the 234 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in 2024 and the 18 officers reportedly killed in the line of duty so far in 2025. It also expresses unwavering support for law enforcement officers across the U.S. in their pursuit of preserving safe and secure communities, and recognizes the need to ensure that law enforcement officers have the equipment, training, and resources they need to protect their health and safety while they protect the public.
