SENATOR SUSAN COLLINS TO REPRESENT UNITED STATES SENATE IN COMMEMORATIVE JOINT CONGRESSIONAL SESSION IN NEW YORK

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senator Susan Collins will be joining other Senators and members of the House of Representatives in New York City this Friday, September 6, 2002 for a Commemorative Joint Meeting of Congress. The session will be convened in remembrance of the victims and heros of September 11, 2001 and in recognition of the courage and spirit of the city of New York, which was the first Capital of the United States.

During the session, Senator Collins will be joined by Representative Vito Fosella (R-NY) in presenting a commemorative plaque to be mounted in Federal Hall. This plaque is a gift of the U.S. Congress, made out of a slab of sandstone that was once part of the foundation of the original United States Capitol. The plaque will memorialize the special session, remarking that the U.S. Congress convened in Federal Hall in honor of the struggle and strength of the people of New York City through the events of September 11th and the proceeding year. The ceremony will also feature a reading of "The Names" by U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins, and a Congressional rendition of the National Anthem.

Following the joint session, Members will attend a luncheon hosted by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg at the Regent Wall Street Hotel Ballroom.
