WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Susan Collins met this week in her Washington, D.C. office with Sophia Warren of Scarborough, one of this year’s Girls Nation Senators. Girls Nation is a nonpartisan program organized by the American Legion Auxiliary that identifies young women who are rising high school seniors and display characteristics of leadership. Maine’s Girls Nation Senators are selected by their peers at a statewide meeting of delegates at Dirigo Girls State to represent them at the national conference. Through a series of mock caucuses, seminars, and meetings with federal officials, Girls Nation Senators learn about the legislative process and the importance of civic engagement.
