Washington, D.C.—This evening, U.S. Senator Susan Collins visited soldiers from the Maine National Guard who are currently stationed in Washington, D.C.  Following the riot on January 6, more than 200 members of the Maine National Guard joined thousands of National Guard troops from across the country in assisting federal law enforcement with protecting the grounds of the U.S. Capitol.  The Maine National Guard members have been in D.C. since last WEEKEND and are expected to return to Maine soon.

“I am so proud of the members of the Maine National Guard who answered the call to protect the Capitol and ensure that the Inauguration was conducted safely,” said Senator Collins.  “More than 200 members of the Maine National Guard left their loved ones and jobs more than a week ago to defend our democracy.  It was an honor to thank them in person before they return home.”

Maine National Guard personnel supporting the inauguration in D.C. include soldiers from the 251st Engineer Company based in Norway, the 136th Engineer Company based in Lewiston and Skowhegan, and the 185th Engineer Company based in Houlton.
