U.S. Senator Susan Collins today announced that she has joined the recently formed Senate Caucus on Mental Health Reform. The Caucus aims to increase the awareness of current mental health issues. The Mental Health Reform Caucus will allow for an open forum for debate on mental health issues.
“Mental health is a critical, and often overlooked, part of the healthcare system,” commented Senator Collins. “Much more stands to be done to assure that those with mental illness and their families are not left behind. I believe the Senate Caucus on Mental Health Reform will help bring some of society’s unseen problems into the open and will make finding solutions so much easier.”
Senator Collins continues to be an outspoken supporter of those with mental illness and their families. She recently reintroduced the Keeping Families Together Act to help improve access to mental health services and assist states in eliminating the practice of parents relinquishing custody of their children solely for the purpose of securing treatment. Additionally, Senator Collins has cosponsored the Positive Aging Act, which aims increase older Americans’ access to quality mental health screening and treatment.
