U.S. Senator Susan Collins “visited” a third grade classroom in Brewer today, or so to speak. Senator Collins, who was in her office in Washington, D.C., connected with Mrs. Cherrie MacInnes’ third grade classroom at Washington Street Elementary School via a web camera. This is all part of the class’ “Chatting Across the USA” project.
“What a delight it was to be able to speak to the students and learn more about this exciting and innovative project,” said Senator Collins. “I am so impressed with the students’ knowledge of Maine and with their strong desire to continue learning more about our country.”
Mrs. MacInnes started the web-based project in 2009 after a student from Brewer moved to Minnesota. This was their way of keeping in touch. MacInnes then began the “Chatting Across the USA” project and her students have “virtually” traveled to all 50 states. This year’s third graders even chat with their pen-pals in Belarus.
Today, the students told Senator Collins what they have learned so far through their web camera, including facts from around the country. They also like to share facts about Maine with other students. In return, Senator Collins spoke to the class about what it’s like representing Maine in the United States Senate.
