SEN. COLLINS COSPONSORS LEGISLATION TO CONSIDER THE TRANSFER OF BRUNSWICK’S STOWE HOUSE TO THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE

Senator Susan Collins today announced that she has cosponsored legislation that would investigate the feasibility of Brunswick’s Harriet Beecher Stowe House to the National Park Service.  The bill, S.662, was recently introduced by Senator Olympia Snowe.   “Brunswick’s Stowe House is a treasure and holds a important place in the nation’s history,” noted Senator Collins.  “This legislation is a first step to sharing the Stowe House with all of America.”   Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin while at her home in Brunswick.  Her book is considered by many to be the quintessential example of anti-slavery literature of the 1850’s.  The literature’s impact on the American public was so great that President Lincoln, upon meeting Stowe, is reported to have said, “You're the little lady who started this great war.”   The Stowe House is located at 63 Federal Street in Brunswick and is currently owned by Bowdoin College.   ###
