MAINE DELEGATION’S REACTION TO LAYOFF ANNOUNCEMENT AT MAINE MILITARY AUTHORITY IN LIMESTONE

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Senators Olympia J. Snowe (R-ME) and Susan Collins (R-ME) and Congressmen Tom Allen (D-ME) and Mike Michaud (D-ME) have released this statement following the announcement by the Maine Military Authority (MMA) that it intends to temporarily layoff around 100 employees at its facility in Limestone.                  “Maintaining a robust and steady workload at this important facility is essential to sustaining the skilled workers at Limestone and the northern Maine economy.  We are committed to helping continue the dialogue between the Maine Military Authority, the U.S. Army, and the National Guard Bureau to provide a more predictable and long-term workload to avoid additional layoffs,” said the delegation in a joint statement.               Members of the Maine delegation recently met with the Governor to discuss workload at the Maine Military Authority in Limestone.  Staff members of the Maine delegation have met with Gary Motsek, Deputy G-3 for Support Operations at the Army Materiel Command, to determine Army depot maintenance equipment workload and availability of potential near-term work for the Maine Military Authority.                    While Humvee workload is decreasing, the delegation strongly supports efforts and will continue to encourage discussions between the two entities.  Army representatives pledged to engage in immediate discussions directly with MMA representatives to identify additional work for the facility.                  The U.S. Army recently awarded Maine Military Authority’s Maine Readiness Sustainment Maintenance Center with a one year contract with two one-year options with a maximum value of $8.3 million to recapitalize 300 Humvees in the first year and an additional 250 in each option year.  A previous contract for Humvee resetting work is being completed at the Maine Military Authority.  The delegation noted that the Maine Military Authority won the latest contract in February because of the superior and cost-efficient work being performed by the dedicated workforce in Limestone.  The Limestone facility employs approximately 490 people and has refurbished over 4,700 Humvees for the Army at a total projected cost savings of over $229 million since 1997.   ###         For more information, contact: Antonia Ferrier (Snowe)                       202/224-1304  Jen Burita (Collins)                               202/224-2523  Mark Sullivan (Allen)                207/774-5019  Monica Castellanos (Michaud)  207/782-3704
