Maine Airports To Receive Awards Totaling More Than $4 Million From The U.S. Department Of Transportation

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Senator Susan Collins, the Ranking Member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, and U.S. Senator Angus King today announced that several Maine airports have been awarded federal grants, totaling more than $4.7 million from the Federal Aviation Administration to be used for general improvements and safety enhancements.

"Maine's large geographic area makes air travel an important transportation option that connects towns and cities across the state," said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. "Maine's small airports play a vital role in supporting local businesses, especially in the state's more rural regions. This funding will help make necessary improvements and maintain a safe operational environment at our airports."

The awards and recipients are as follows:

  • Bangor International Airport will receive $1,399,346 to install runway sensors; modify the terminal building PA system; rehabilitate the taxiway; and rehabilitate the apron
  • Steven A. Bean Municipal Airport in Rangeley will receive $200,000 to install perimeter fencing and a vertical/visual guidance system
  • Belfast Municipal Airport will receive $138,000 to plan for required improvements
  • Biddeford Municipal Airport will receive $320,000 to install airport beacons and perimeter fencing
  • Brunswick Executive Airport will receive $150,000 to remove obstructions to the runway approach
  • Caribou Municipal Airport will receive $150,000 to plan for future airport needs
  • Central Maine Airport of Norridgewock will receive $150,000 for the acquisition of snow removal equipment
  • Dewitt Field, Old Town Municipal Airport will receive $50,000 to conduct to conduct an environmental study
  • Eastport Municipal Airport will receive $150,000 to install weather reporting equipment
  • Greenville Municipal Airport will receive $225,000 for environmental mitigation

  • Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport will receive $300,000 to install wind cones and replace obstruction lights and poles
  • Knox County Regional Airport in Rockland will receive $135,000 to rehabilitate the runway
  • Northern Maine Regional Airport at Presque Isle will receive $300,000 to rehabilitate the runway, taxiway and apron
  • Pittsfield Municipal Airport will receive $150,000 to plan for future development
  • Portland International Jetport will receive $484,183 to acquire snow removal equipment
  • Sanford Seacoast Regional Airport will receive $315,000 to rehabilitate the taxiway to plan for future airport needs
  •  Sugarloaf  Regional Airport in Carrabassett will receive $130,000 to acquire land for development
