KEY ENVIRONMENTAL ADVOCACY GROUP HONORS SENATOR SUSAN COLLINS’S LEADERSHIP ON ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG), a national environmental advocacy group, honored Senator Susan Collins Tuesday with its "Public Interest Champion" Award for her leadership on legislation intended to clean and protect the natural environment.

"I am deeply committed to protecting the quality of the air we breathe, to safeguarding natural treasures such as the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and to promoting a cleaner energy future," said Senator Collins. "I am honored to receive this recognition."

USPIRG honored Senator Collins at a Washington reception Tuesday evening, as Collins prepared to introduce comprehensive legislation Wednesday to regulate the emission of four major air pollutants emitted by coal-fired power plants.

"U.S. PIRG is proud to honor Senator Collins as a Public Interest Champion for her strong leadership on protecting and strengthening clean air protections and her consistent record of protecting the public from toxic chemicals," said U.S. PIRG's New England Field Organizer, Matthew Davis. "We are particularly proud of the work we have done together on protecting the Arctic Wildlife Refuge, and we look forward to working together to encourage renewable energy."

U.S. PIRG is a national non-profit, non-partisan public interest research and advocacy organization with 2,500 members in Maine. In honor of the organization's 30th anniversary, for the first time ever, US PIRG is honoring a select group of Senators and Representatives with the "Public Interest Champion" Award.
