WASHINGTON, D.C.-U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King today announced that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is awarding three organizations in Maine a total of more than $1.5 million in federal grants to support research and development projects that benefit the fishing industry. The competitive grant funding comes from the Saltonstall-Kennedy (S-K) Program and will support projects in the areas of aquaculture, conservation engineering, and ecosystem studies.
"This funding is great news for these organizations and for Maine's valuable fishing industry," Senators Collins and King said in a joint statement. "These organizations are engaged in research that will advance our understanding of these resources and lead to better management of our vitally important fisheries."
Award recipients are as follows:
Downeast Institute for Applied Marine Research & Education: $348,767 for aquaculture projects
University of Maine: $229,326 for conservation engineering and $249,516 for ecosystem studies
Gulf of Maine Research Institute: $718,004 for ecosystem studies
