COLLINS BILL URGES SAUDIS TO FIGHT HARDER AGAINST HOMEGROWN TERRORISM

Washington, DC -- Senator Susan Collins is the original co-sponsor of a bill that urges the Saudi Arabian government to take stronger measures to fight terrorism in Saudi Arabia.

"I am not convinced that the Saudi government is doing everything it can in good faith to act as a partner with the United States in the war against terrorism," said Senator Susan Collins. "While the Saudi government has made some positive strides in recent months, it is clear to me that more needs to be done and that the U.S. must maintain pressure on the Saudi government.

"The Saudi government must ensure that funds from charities and wealthy individuals do not end up in the hands of terrorists. This requires complete cooperation with the U.S."

The Saudi Accountability bill expresses a Sense of Congress that the government of Saudi Arabia should immediately and unconditionally:

§ Provide complete and unrestricted cooperation with the United States in investigation of terrorism and terrorism financing. § Permanently close all charities, schools, and other organizations that fund, train, incite, encourage, or aid terrorism. § End funding or other support by the Saudi government of domestic and offshore charities, schools, and other organizations that train, incite, encourage, or aid terrorism. § Block all funding from private Saudi citizens and entities to any Saudi-based terror organization.

The bill directs the President of the United States to enforce certain sanctions if these actions are not taken by the Saudi government. But the President may choose to waive a sanction if national security is at risk.
