Ahead Of National Small Business Week Senators Collins, Casey Introduce Bill To Strengthen Economy, Help Small Businesses Create Jobs

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Bob Casey (D-PA) introduced bipartisan legislation today, The Small Business Tax Certainty and Growth Act, which would strengthen the economy and make it easier for small businesses to grow and create jobs. Recent studies by the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) indicate that taxes are the number one concern of small business owners, and that constant change in the tax code is among their chief concerns.

The Small Business Tax Certainty and Growth Act would bring much-needed certainty back to the U.S. tax code, empowering small businesses with the predictability needed for growth. A key feature of this law allows small businesses to create and implement long-term capital investment plans, which are vital to growth. In addition, this legislation would lower the expenses associated with starting a new business and ease complex accounting rules and administrative burdens placed on small businesses.

“Small businesses are our nation’s job creators. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, small businesses generated 63 percent of the net new jobs that were created between 1993 and 2013,” said Senator Collins. “The uncertainty in our tax code, however, is hindering the ability of small businesses throughout Maine and across the country to invest in expansion, and create new, good-paying American jobs. This bipartisan legislation restores the certainty required for our small businesses to successfully create jobs and grow our economy.”

“This is commonsense legislation that will give small businesses the certainty they need to create jobs and grow,” Senator Casey said. “Small businesses across Pennsylvania are the driver of our economy. Congress should come together and pass this legislation this year.”

This bipartisan legislation has been endorsed by the Maine Chamber of Commerce, the Maine Society of Certified Public Accountants, the Manufacturers Association of Maine, NFIB, The National Restaurant Association, and National Taxpayers Union.

Senator Collins spoke from the Senate floor this morning to urge all members of the U.S. Senate to support this bipartisan legislation. Senators Collins and Casey originally introduced the Small Business Tax Certainty and Growth Act in 2013.
